Networking events—do you look forward to them because they are a vehicle to broaden your circle of professional contacts or do you dread them because you feel they are a waste of your time? Often what makes a networking event a valuable experience is the attitude and strategy you bring to it. Here are 10 tips you can implement today to make positive connections with those you meet and enjoy yourself in the process.

  1. Call two people ahead of time to meet at the event.
  2. Attend with a “wing person.” Share your goals for the event; two people cover the room better than one.
  3. Upon arrival, check name tags to obtain names of people you want to meet. Ask people at the registration table to point out these individuals.
  4. Be the “introducer.” The person who brings others together is considered the most valuable person in the room.
  5. Reach out to individuals standing alone. The person who “rescues” others is perceived as generous, warm and valuable, and is, in fact, doing a great service.
  6. Discover a need in every conversation, something that you or your network can provide benefit.
  7. After learning where a person works, ask about their current, significant challenges. (There is a need waiting to be discovered here.)
  8. Ask each person who they were hoping to meet at the event and help them connect with such a person or make a virtual introduction after the event.
  9. If you are stuck with a “monopolizer,” (someone who doesn’t stop talking) introduce them to someone else. (This is called the “give and go” move.)
  10. Schedule 15 minutes of follow-up before going to the event.
